The Joint Nutrition Monitoring Evaluation Committee is a Federal advisory committee jointly sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (DHHS). It was established in October 1983 as stipulatedinthe Joint ImplementationPlan for a ComprehensiveNational Nutrition Monitoring System submitted to Congress by USDA and DHHS in 1981.. Its purpose is to develop reports on the nutritional status of the U.S. population to be issued to Congress jointly by the Secretaries of Agriculture and Health and Human Services at 3-year intervals. The Committee is to integrate and interpretinformationfrom the componentparts of the monitoring system and tomakerecommendationsconcerningthemonitoringsystem. Themembersare appointed by the Assistant Secretary for Food and Consumer Services, USDA, and the Assistant Secretary for Health, DHHS, who jointly chair the Committee.
